ongoingOn a summer evening at sunset, Le Thanh Mong sat on Khang Vu Thu's rooftop, watching an outdoor movie. This had become her favorite pastime since her family's fortunes declined, forcing them to move to the small city of Nam Dai. Khang Vu Thu's secondhand projector cast images onto the opposite red-brick wall, currently showing 'The Last Night on Earth.' He opened a can of beer and suddenly asked her, 'If tonight were the last night on Earth, what would you do?' 'I would immediately get on a plane and leave this place,' she replied without hesitation. 'I want to die in Florence.' 'Oh,' he nodded, then asked, 'Where the hell is Florence?' 'In Italy.' 'That's far.' 'What about you?' He drained the beer can in his hand, crushed it flat, and tossed it into a corner. 'I'd still just sit here,' he said, smiling as he pointed to the night sky. 'When your plane flies overhead, I'll shout really loud.' 'Shout what?' 'You'll hear it on the last night on Earth.' Humans cannot hold their breath like goldfish, yet we are determined to become them.
